Abstract: the aim of this study was to to evaluate the use of waste from the timber industry of the brazilian amazon region in the production of wood-cement composites. the compatibility of six amazon hardwood native species with cement cp v ari was assessed through axial compression tests in cylindrical specimens. the waste was used was only treated by washing in hot water for two hours. the ratio cement/wood was 3:1 in mass, along with aluminum sulfate curing accelerators at 3%, and calcium chloride curing accelerators at 3% and 5%. the results of the axial compression tests indicated the potential use of waste for three species combined with calcium chloride curing accelerator treatment at 5%. wood-cement particleboards were made with waste of the species cedrela odorata l. (cedar), vochysia maximum ducke (quaruba), hymenaea courbaril l. (jatoba) and a mixture of them. the test results of the physical and mechanical properties of the particleboards showed that all had adequate characteristics for the purpose, and the cedar species particleboards presented the best performance.

Abstract: Swimming performance of fish constitutes a good ecophysiological tool to evaluate the ability of species to use different types of habitats. In order to understand how the swimming performance is related to the hydraulic environment, we compared the critical velocity of five fish (Characidae): Stygichthys typhlops (groundwater troglobiotic); Piabina argentea and Bryconamericus stramineus (riverine); Hemigrammus marginatus (generalist, found in rivers and floodplains) and Psellogrammus kennedyi (lacustrine). Swimming speed tests were performed in a respirometer-type apparatus. Total body length was the variable that best explained the maximum speed attained by all species under study. The critical swimming speed values (in body lengths per second) for each species were as follows: P. argentea (13.75); B. stramineus (9.32); H. marginatus (6.32); P. kennedyi (4.00); and lower in hypogean species, S. typhlops (3.31). All data of this study suggest a strong correlation between swimming performance and the hydraulic environment in which the species are found. The riverine, generalist and lacustrine species (the troglobiotic being included in the last group) showed a trend toward a decrease in speed.

Abstract: a total of 22 endophytic fungi isolated from coffee (coffea arabica l.) were cultivated in vitro and their crude extracts tested. the screening was carried out using the agar diffusion method against staphylococcus aureus, escherichia coli and candida albicans. the most effective isolate was alternaria alternata, and subsequently, its extract was assayed. the total phenolic content was 3.44 μg gae/mg of the crude extract. for the antibacterial and antifungal activity assays, minimum inhibitory concentrations (mic) and minimum bactericidal and fungicidal concentrations (mbc and mfc) were determined. the ranges of mic values were 50-100 μg/ml for s. aureus and 400-800 μg/ml for e. coli. the extract did not show activity in the tested concentrations for c. albicans. the fungal crude extract was assayed for antioxidant activities. its ability to scavenge dpph radicals and antioxidant activity by β-carotene/linoleic acid system oxidation was not significant. in addition, antitumor activity was studied using the mtt assay. at a dilution of 400 μg/ml, the extract displayed a cytotoxic activity of approximately 50% towards hela cells in vitro. the results indicate that endophytic fungi could be a promising source of bioactive compounds and warrant further study.

Abstract: background: the syntax score was developed as an angiographic tool to grade the complexity of coronary artery disease in patients with three-vessel and/or left main disease. we evaluated its role in predicting clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) in non-selected patients, treated in the daily clinical practice of a reference center. methods: analysis of patients undergoing pci from march to september 2009 and followed-up for up to 12 months. pa-tients were divided in tertiles according to the syntax score. the primary endpoint included major adverse cardiac events (mace) - death, non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and target-vessel revascularization. the ability of the syntax score in predicting mace was assessed by the roc (receiver operator characteristic) curve. results: two hundred and thirty-four patients with a mean syntax score of 11.6 ± 6.2 points were included. tertile i had a syntax score < 9 (average 5.9); tertile ii, > 9 and < 13 (average 10.8); and tertile iii, > 13 (average 18.3). in the clinical follow-up of 7.2 ± 4.9 months, the incidence of mace was greater in tertile iii when compared to tertiles i and ii (2.5% vs. 6.4% vs. 14.1%; p = 0.0075). the roc curve showed an area under the curve of 0.667 (p = 0.012) indicating a moderate ability to anticipate the occurrence of mace in this population. conclusions: the syntax score proved to be seful in predicting the occurrence of mace after pci in real world patients.

Abstract: although private tutoring is an activity still in the shadows, it is today an increasingly globalized phenomenon, whose economical-financial, political and pedagogical dimensions are still faraway from a thorough analysis and reflection. if students resorting to tutoring (family members, classmates, friends, and even teachers) has always constituted a reality present in the learning process, the exponential development that the private tutoring market has known in the last decades has given it very different contours, with the traditional ?domestic tutor? being replaced by firms, economical groups and several types of franchising situations that are multiplied by thousands of centres that can be found across the world. in this text we aim to present some data gathered in the research that we have been conducting on this matter, namely the results of questionnaires filled out by 12th year students attending the secondary schools located in a portuguese city, which we have named aquarela city. we will also analyse the repercussions that the phenomenon introduces into the field of educational policies and its implications in students? school results. if, in the sixties, bourdieu and passeron introduced us to the ?heirs?, today, we have before us the ?new heirs?, as these students, besides possessing the cultural capital discussed by these authors, have, simultaneously, access to more of the learning that is required by the school that they officially attend, through complementary private strategies that they use as a competitive edge in the competition with classmates that are less favoured by this double family inheritance.

Abstract: in this text we analyze the ways of regulation of private tutoring, an activity that is at present a success story as a private educational product with an widespread use across the world that we can even see as parallel to that of the school model. firstly, we will characterize the regulation policies that are in place worldwide: i) the situation of the countries that ignore the activity of private tutoring; ii) the case of the countries that have chosen to prohibit private tutoring, totally or partially; iii) the case of the countries that have recognized the activity and that have even developed educational policies that have found in private tutoring an ally in the improvement of school results. we will then discuss the situation in portugal, a country where the activity has a long history, but that knows nowadays a new vigor and greater social visibility. in what concerns the regulation policies of private tutoring in portugal, we can talk about a bureaucratic regulation without a great impact on the practices of education professionals, students and families. we will conclude our text with some reflections on the need to give public dimension to the discussion on the activity of private tutoring, as it has many and serious social and political repercussions, namely with respect to the democratization of school access and success, a main issue that is at the heart of the concern with equity in public policies.
